ONLINE EXCLUSIVE: CREATURES OF COMFORT

Since opening the New York outpost of her multi-brand Los Angeles boutique Creatures of Comfort in September 2010, owner and designer Jade Lai has solidified her spot as an up-and-comer to watch. Originally known for stocking comfortable, wearable pieces from designers like Rachel Comey, Acne, and MM6, Lai followed suit when she launched her own in-house label three years ago. “I like to design with the user in mind,” says Lai. “I picture how something will function in the wearers’ lives and how they will experience the piece.” Initially a collection of basics featuring jersey knits, long skirts, and jumpsuits, the store’s namesake brand has since then evolved into a full-fledged line that includes outerwear, knitwear, shoes, and accessories.

The Creatures of Comfort Fall 2013 collection was inspired by the late French-born American artist Louise Bourgeois, whose modern, feminist sculptures, drawings, and prints served as proponents of change in the late 1970s. Lai chose a versatile color palette that ranges from dove gray and white to black and navy to complement the boxy, loose-fitted silhouettes. Striking patterns include a stark, geometric grid and bold, graphic eyes, while rich textures include chunky knits, quilted cotton, and curly wool. The tailored shorts, trousers, and jackets give balance to the silk dresses, shirts, and skirts. Ideal for layering, the interchangeable pieces form a versatile, foundational collection. Designed with both the New York and Los Angeles markets in mind, Creatures of Comfort strikes a happy medium with its Fall offerings by maintaining a clear vision. “As far as æsthetic is concerned, it is the same girl,” says Lai. “She is individualistic, creative, forward-thinking, and adventurous.”
