TLM09: NEW WORK – BEN WEINER

We love supporting new talent. Every issue, we try to feature a few unpublished works from some of our favorite artists. We give them free rein of a full-spread; the only limitations are the generous dimensions of the page. For our Spring issue, New York-based painter Ben Weiner sent over his lush, luminous painting of his own palette in close-up. Here’s what he had to say about it.

Hole is one of six new paintings on view in my exhibition “SMUSH,” at Benrimon Contemporary through December 15th. Each of the six paintings depicts a microscopic view of the paint on my palette. As I worked on each painting, the topography of my palette changed, generating imagery for the next painting. Thus, the series tells the story of its own creation through the evolving landscape of my palette.

Along with these paintings, “SMUSH” features a three-channel video installation that magnifies the process by which paint is produced, and sculpture objects made of crystals grown from paint pigment. Thus, in a variety of media, I reinterpret the medium of oil paint by incorporating science and technology into my studio practice.

Ben Weiner’s “SMUSH” runs through December 15 at Benrimon Contemporary, 514 West 24th Street, New York. For more information, please visit BenWeiner.com.
