3X1'S WOMENSWEAR

It’s undeniable that a new veneration for denim is among us, and proof sits observable through the glass walls of 3×1’s shop in New York’s SoHo. Although, to founder Scott Morrison, the man formerly behind Paper Denim & Cloth and Earnest Sewn, that respect has been the pulse of his business for years. The bespoke-focused jeans brand is a continuation of those values and his own reverence for indigo twill. Morrison can proudly boast that 3×1 has introduced more than six hundred denims in the short time it has been around, a feat driven not by compulsion but more likely by his loyalty to the idea that pairing jeans with an individual requires a certain rapport and a more tailored experience. The made-to-order service serves as a large portion of business, but 3×1’s emergence into the women’s market a year ago and retail partnerships with stores such as Barneys, Bergdorf Goodman, and Le Bon Marché have helped the label flourish. With the new expanded women’s line of tops and other designs, 3×1 extends its appeal to those who are perhaps less obsessed with denim than its usual customers. Morrison says, “It’s all about morphing away from the skinny cycle and delving deeper into high-waist boyfriends, cropped boot cuts, and wider legs of varying degrees.” The Spring collection is Morrison’s adaptive response. It quietly advances 3×1 in a modish, new direction by evoking and modernizing shapes and fits from the Seventies. Scott admits his main problem now is figuring out how to ensure the integrity of his product is sustained as the new growth continues. With more retail demand, the upcoming lines serve as only an exemplary exten- sion of the brand’s constitution.
