Decades ago, skateboarding was a sport of back alleys and abandoned pools. Today, in many ways, it’s one of Chelsea galleries and critic’s circles. Over the last several years, artists like Damien Hirst and Robert Longo have collaborated with brands like Supreme, tacking four-figure price tags on decks baring their signature marks, often clear reproductions of their most famous work.

Conversely, brands like Brooklyn-based Along have found something of a sweet spot. Since opening its doors in 2011, Along has focused on creating limited-edition surfboards and skateboards by hand, coupling sustainable materials with designs from artists who share their passion for the natural world—less commercial, but equally beautiful. “Along is a kind project trying to give back to nature what nature gives to us,” says founder David Lopez. “That’s why we produce boards with sustainable materials and old-school techniques, always referring to the roots in surf and skate.”

Young prodigies, whatever their trade, require a wide variety of handlers. Chaos, early adulthood, and extremely high stakes have a tendency to trigger a quick and fiery unraveling, one that often burns brightly and briefly before the public turns a blind eye. Mikaela Shiffrin will not be one of those prodigies.

The eighteen-year-old American ski racer, cautiously aware of the dangers of a quick ascent, still became, last year, the third-youngest woman to hold a World Championship title in the history of her sport. That victory, in turn, threw the weighty expectations of gold at next year’s XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi upon her. Peter Huynh is a triple threat: skateboarder, fashion designer, and film director. The Elmhurst, Queens, native was given his first skateboard at thirteen—a hand-me-down from an older kid in his neighborhood, one of the few who took up skating instead of drug dealing.

There’s a new kind of kick in town, and it’s hitting the pavement hard. Meet Mother, the sole product of Swedish brand EYTYS, a unisex shoe company offering a fresh take on the classic canvas sneaker. Founders Jonathan Hirschfeld and Max Schiller put their concept into action last year after a trip to Tokyo, which is, according to the duo, “perhaps the most insane and inspiring city in the world.” Schiller, Hirschfeld, and another longtime friend, Charlie Hedin, officially founded EYTYS—named because the founders were born in the Eighties and are members of Generation Y—in September 2012 in Stockholm.

Just hearing the details of Nathalie Moellhausen’s jet-setting month, you’d think she was living a glamorous red-carpet life: Brazil, Cuba, a week in Europe, Nanjing, Sydney, and now Paris to “decompress.” The reality is that Moellhausen is dead tired from traveling from one exotic gym to another, training for a series of megawatt competitions that will dictate whether she finally makes it into the Olympics.

During Art Basel Miami Beach, The Last Magazine curated a one-day exhibition called The Last Space at the Webster Miami.
