THE NEW FACES OF NEW YORK FASHION WEEK, FALL 2018
New York Fashion Week has traditionally marked the beginning of show season, kicking off a month of countless runways that winds its way through London and then onto Milan and Paris. There’s an element of excitement and discovery to New York, when the season’s freshest models start to break out and make their mark in an industry that is always looking for the next big face. Here, the casting director Liz Goldson of AM Casting rounds up fifteen of her favorite new faces, shot in New York earlier this month by Martin Lidell as the shows got underway. “Sometimes you just meet someone or you get their digitals and you just know,” says Goldson about the intrinsic connection she experiences at the best times. “It’s such an exciting feeling for me!”
Styled by our fashion editor Katelyn Gray in a mix of runway designs and their own pieces, these fifteen models reflect the new diversity sweeping fashion, hailing from four continents in a powerful demonstration of internationalism. Even as we celebrate the industry’s new inclusiveness, however, it’s important to remember that the market is a fickle beast—and brings with it a host of its own damaging consequences. “There has been an unquenchable thirst for the new all the time, which personally I find frustrating and disheartening,” Goldson says. “I think people forget that these are kids and the effects this has on their self-esteem.” In an industry where what’s in today is easily old tomorrow, these are the new faces we think are in it for the long run.
