REJINA PYO DESIGNS CLOTHES FOR EVERY WOMAN

Though fashion may still have a diversity problem, many young designers are now determined to break that cycle. Enter London-based Korean designer Rejina Pyo, whose architectural garments are renowned for pushing the boundaries of femininity. “I don’t want my clothing to appeal to a singular type of woman but to celebrate our diversity and expression of personal style,” explains the Central Saint Martins graduate. “I always want my garments to flatter and fit comfortably, because I don’t think interesting design needs to compromise on function. [But I also] want the designs to resonate with women from all different backgrounds and ages.”

That is certainly easier said than done but has become an integral part of the Rejina Pyo brand identity. Known for developing wearable pieces that experiment with proportion, the designer’s approach transcends rigid definitions such as by age. “I reference a lot of modern art in my designs, which inspires me to push the boundaries of form and color,” Pyo explains. Intuition, however, also plays a critical part in this process. “I don’t like to think about trends when I begin a season. I like to design to my mood and what I want to be wearing at the time.”

Fashion clearly runs in the family for Pyo, the daughter of a Korean clothing designer, but her education has proved equally instrumental in shaping her vision too. “CSM really challenges you to form an authentic point of view,” she says. “It is a highly inspiring, competitive, and motivating environment.” Æsthetically speaking, this designer’s own vision is one of modern femininity—both elegant and playful. But underlying this visual identity is a steadfast commitment to quality over quantity. “I want the Rejina Pyo woman to cherish her pieces because they are special and to enjoy wearing them because they are still versatile and practical to her lifestyle.”
