TLM09: THE LAST PEOPLE – ALLOY ASH
Ever since we began back in 2008, we have worked with photographer David Mushegain every issue to bring you a collection of some of the raddest people from all around the world. David shoots and gets to know the young kids he meets on his travels, through his friends, or just walking down the street, and we are always happy to share his discoveries with you. Our weekly postings of David’s Last People continue right here.
Alloy Ash hails from the town of Detroit. She’s a welder, a model, and an urban explorer. So basically she’s a badass. I met Alloy when I visited Detroit on the Chili Peppers tour which I am still on curently. Actually sitting in Warsaw, Poland, right now typing this before the show begins. Okay so Alloy is rad. That’s what I have to say. She goes hand-in-hand with her native city. Detroit is like an abandoned kidney-shaped pool just waiting to be skated. Meaning it’s there, you just have to drop in and go for it. It’s such a cool place. Alloy embodies the spirit of Detroit…I’m just so stoked to have met her…Another thing I want to talk about is Alloy’s modeling. Okay so basically I think there are so many incredible people out there just waiting to be photographed and it blows my mind that fashion does not totally embrace this. The industry kind of sticks with a singular vision of beauty and I am not sure if people are scared or they just don’t see outside the lines. I’m sure that has a bit to do with it, as most magazines have the same formula and most magazines and editors are run by their advertisers. So there is not so much room to take chances. But I think this will change. I have faith in our new generation. We just have to get the old guard to loosen their grip a bit…but we know, as tight as their grip is, time will take its course and like the ending of some foe in a movie who is hanging from the edge of a building…finger by finger that grip slips…I was so happy to see Charlotte Free succeed as she’s so amazing and I hope that paves the way for other awesome girls. Girls like Stella Maxwell, who just blows my mind. And more unobvious girls like Alloy Ash who just have so much to bring along with being gorgeous. Let’s open the doors and bring some fashion back to fashion…could be interesting…there’s a whole world alive around us…one that might be hard to see if you are living in ivory towers…Oh and yeah Alloy is a welder…I mentioned that at the beginning, but I think that’s so rad…We shot this photo at Alloy’s home in Detroit, okay peace.
