For Spring 2012, designer Araks Yeramyan reached way back in time for inspiration, to ’20s tennis champion Suzanne Lenglen, the first famous female tennis player and an icon for her billowing white dresses and love of pleats. It’s an appropriate base for a collection that abounds in classical silhouettes and gorgeous prints—including a grid based on the netting of a racquet—and Yeramyan’s sharp eye for popping color and lingerie-inspired design. Lenglen—a groundbreaking woman in a sport heretofore dominated by men—was an archetypal Araks woman, according to Yeramyan. “She is subtly sexy and has a masculine touch to her femininity,” she says of her imagined ideal customer. As Lenglen’s modern-day descendants battle towards the French Open title on a court named after her at Roland Garros, we present Arno Frugier’s editorial of Daga Ziober in Araks’ Spring collection, a combination of ethereal prints and flowing fabrics that blend in a mix of hard and soft that is all aces.
