BEST OF PARIS MEN'S F/W 13

There was a newfound levity to the Paris men’s collections for Fall 2013, as can be seen in The Last Magazine fashion director Alastair McKimm’s five favorite looks. For the storied house of Balenciaga, it was a season of transition, an interregnum between Nicolas Ghesquière and Alexander Wang, but the label still pulled off a cleanly minimalist show of sharp classics with a stark simplicity. Lightness reigned supreme at Lanvin as well, with a newly loosened silhouette and the rich colors their women’s line is famous for. Rick Owens took a step outside his comfort zone too, adding structure and shape to his long and and loose lines. Raf Simons’ collection had a playful air, all cheery colors and mismatched designs that also marked a change in tone from his usual seriousness. Sobriety, the consensus seemed to be, is out, and there was no better proof of this than Rei Kawakubo’s “Tree of Youth”-inspired collection for Comme des Garçons, with its awkward cuts and clashing prints, topped off with Mickey Mouse ears.
