BEST OF PARIS MEN’S S/S 2013

After quirk and individuality in London and new proportions and pops of color in Milan, the men’s season ended in Paris yesterday after five days of shows with a darker and more aggressive sensibility, as The Last Magazine fashion director Alastair McKimm’s five favorite looks from the week demonstrate. That moodiness was par for the course for Rick Owens, who sent out soft swishing skirts accessorized with legwarmers, and Givenchy, where Riccardo Tisci took his fascination with religious iconography to a natural apotheosis with printed Renaissance portraits of the Madonna. There was a harder edge as well at Lanvin, with Alber Elbaz and Lucas Ossendrijver working with a stark, mostly black-and-white palette with more than a hint of a rock aesthetic. Phillip Lim toyed with layers and prints with assured ease, and Raf Simons—just days before his haute couture début at Dior—offered up an assured, retrospective reminder of his vast talents.
