STUDIO VISIT – BRIAN SENSEBE

The Lima-born mixed-media artist Brian Sensebe is one of the New York art world’s most intriguing young talents. “I have been making art for as long as I can remember,” he says, and his rich works, which bring a sharp contemporary twist to the traditions of Abstract Expressionism, reflect his years of experimentation and development. His pieces—more tactile than paintings, yet more unified than collages—help to reconcile late-20th-century art history with his own personal past, which involved a relocation with his family to South Florida during his youth due to political troubles at home in Peru. “The displacement and tension I felt from this experience was the beginning of my creative expression as an outlet for harboring feelings,” he says. This sort of intertwining of self and the culture at-large is also reflected in the variegated ingredients he brings to his craft. “My work is a study of the very materials I use,” Sensebe explains, referring to his canvases piled with paper, paint, wood, and plaster. “I’m fascinated by the way these materials behave and how they relate to each other. I want to blur the line between a controlled environment and the naturally-occurring world. The abstractions produced through this process are the basis for my body of work.”
