WAVE RIDER

Labor Day has come on gone, but that doesn’t mean summer has to end. Tonight the Buenos Dias Surf Garage celebrates the opening “Wave Rider,” a solo exhibition of surf photography by Yana Toyber. Toyber’s graceful, hazy images—printed on canvas—capture the romance of life with a longboard, a final reminder that even as the seasons change, they will come around again. The exhibition, curated by Stefanie Marco, celebrates some of the female talents—like Keala Kennely, Rochelle Ballard, Coco Ho, and Anastasia Ashley—making their mark in a field that has long been dominated by men. Over two years in Hawaii, Toyber worked closely with her subjects to photograph them in their personal spaces, their bedrooms and workshops, and looking completely at ease submerged in the ocean.

“Wave Rider” opens tonight at Buenos Dias Surf Garage, 6 South Elmwood Avenue, Montauk. Performances by The Postelles, U.S. Royalty, and Japanther to follow at the Memory Motel, 692 Montauk Highway, Montauk.
