BAND OF OUTSIDERS LOOKBOOKS

Scott Sternberg keeps good company, and looks good doing it. In a cutthroat fashion landscape, Sternberg somehow manages to always keep it cool. The former Hollywood agent debuted his Band of Outsiders Fall 2011 collection this fashion week in New York, and his classic California look traveled well. Models rappelled from the ceiling, Momofuku Milk Bar cookies were served, and the Native-American inspired graphics were well-received. But perhaps the most buzz-worthy Band moment of the season was the Polaroids of Kirsten Dunst and James Marsden featured in the brand’s Spring lookbook. It’s no surprise that Sternberg snaps the images himself—not only are the photos beautiful, they exude a playfulness and ease that both he and the brand are known for. Scott spoke with me recently about his newest leading couple.

LK This feels almost like an anti-celebrity campaign because the images are so natural and candid—was that the intention?
SS Well, in the interest of staying positive let’s call it “pro-human.”

LK Why did you you choose Kirsten and James to represent Band of Outsiders this season?
SS Kirsten could pretty much model any season of Boy—she wears clothes so well, and is such a Boy. girl in particular. There was something about the way she’s been wearing her hair lately that reminded me of Spring and the 1930s feeling behind the collection. I had never met James before. We were thinking of ideas for the Band campaign and kept saying we wanted someone all-American, almost from a different time, someone like James Marsden…until it dawned upon us to just ask James Marsden.

LK What was it like working with them? You have featured other great actors from Franka Potente to Andrew Garfield in past campaigns—do you have any favorite moments from the Polaroid series?
SS Kirsten is a friend so working together is easy-breezy; her mom and grandma even came by to hang out. James is fantastic. He’s like an old vaudevillian performer—he’s full of energy, he sings and dances, and basically turns on and off when you need. There are a bunch of favorite moments—what comes to mind now is Jason Schwartzman climbing out of an antique armoire at Omega Prop House, Sarah Silverman freaking out at the pickle smell in Canter’s basement, and Kirsten looking like a dream laying in front of that Lily Pond.
