THE COACHELLA DIARIES, PART 3

My personal mission for the day was to meet my teenage crush Mike Patton, singer of Faith No More. With my artist wristband I had access to just about every area on and behind the field, but for some reason the band had taken special security measures. I made a few attempts to slip into their gated backstage section but gave up before it became too embarrassing. Instead I bolted to the field twenty minutes ahead and planted myself in front of the stage, in the center of the mosh pit. I was prepared to get crushed, but found out quickly that American fans are a bit boring. There was not enough singing, jumping and dancing, just a lot of sweating, pushing and groping. The highlight of the show was a crowd surfing Mike, which sent the fans in a mad frenzy. Sadly, my crush did not make it over to me… Mission incomplete…

On Saturday night 2 Many DJ’s trailer party was kicking off. 1. Champagne was handed around 2. Fellow DJs Eroll Alkan, Trevor Jackson and James Murphy visited. 3. Friends from all over the world found each other. 4. DEVO watched from across the “street.”

To get from the backstage to the stages or tents the production team commands a fleet of golf carts. The field is so big it literally takes fifteen minutes to get from one side to the other. And that’s if you’re running and can avoid stumbling over the thousands of festival-goers sprawled across the field. In the Sahara tent, DJ Z-trip was just finishing his set to give the stage to Die Antwoord, a Zef-Rap act from Capetown, consisting of three members dressed in matching white printed, hooded tracksuits. Frontman Ninja looks like a mix of Vanilla Ice and Jeremy Scott. His sidekick Yo-Landi is a tiny girl with a long blonde Mohawk. Their lyrics are in Zuid Afrikaans and apparently quite obscene. When 2 many DJs finished their set at 1am, we had one more champagne for the road. It would take me another two hours before making it back to the hotel. If I were more of a rock star I would’ve jacked one of those golf carts…

It was a typically cold night to close out New York fashion week on Wednesday, but inside Acme, the Last Magazine launch was keeping everyone warm in celebration of or fourteenth issue featuring the calm beauty of cover star Liya Kebede, shot by Maciek Kobielski.

It’s six PM in London and Elisa Sednaoui has just passed through customs. She was in Italy only three days ago, and now she’s off to Dubai for a Vogue Italia event. Over the phone, her deep voice seems all-knowing, exuding wisdom and grace while expertly injecting humor to downplay her world travels. She is only twenty-six, yet speaks five languages, has lived in three countries, and has grown up a fashion darling, working for Chanel and Giorgio Armani, among countless others.

Much is made of the young person’s imperative to change the world. Startups ought to think sustainably. Artists ought to think globally. Companies ought to give back. And yet how easy it is to do nothing? To head back to our social profiles or photo filters? At a time when people are more connected than they have ever been, we have simultaneously entered an age of narcissism, turning the social world into a tool to self-brand, self-define, and self-promote. And yet there is another groundswell building, one made up of young people who not only want to give back but also see the value in social innovation

A DIFFERENT KIND OF BEAUTY - THE PORTFOLIO

The standard shoot revolves around the ideas of the photographer or the creative director, with makeup artists and hairstylists working as a support team. Here at The Last Magazine, we wanted to celebrate these beauty experts in their own right, so we created a unique beauty portfolio called A Different Kind of Beauty that spans two issues and seven stunning images.

JACQUELYN JABLONSKI'S NIGHT FOR AUTISM

Few models today are quite as ubiquitous, it seems, as Jacquelyn Jablonski, who has lent her sharp features to labels as diverse as Victoria’s Secret and Céline, but the dark-haired New Jersey native says the one cause she really wants to put a face on is autism. For over a year, Jablonski has been working with the organization Autism Speaks to raise awareness of the issue, even helping to ring the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange exactly a year ago today to mark World Autism Awareness Day with her younger brother Tommy (above, with Jablonski), who was diagnosed at the age of two.
