A DIFFERENT KIND OF BEAUTY: AARON DE MEY
Free creative control can result in charmingly bold results. Such is the case here as legendary makeup artist Aaron de Mey gives his creative perspective for this beauty assignment. The New Zealander teamed up with photographer Theo Wenner to let his imagination go wild and the outcome was a vividly psychedelic transformation for Danish darling Frederikke Sofie.
When executing the look, de Mey says he expressed his intent to “execute something colorful, modern, and directional” and wanted the final result to be “playful, but also glamorous and youthful at the same time.” Unexpectedly, its graphic nature aligns with references to face paintings at sporting events, but with an ultra high glam twist.
To create the look, de Mey made the custom painted stripes across Sofie’s face with Makeup Forever Cream colors and used MAC black gel eyeliner on her eyes, Serge Lutens red lipstick for her lips, and a glitter bomb applied to both. “I wanted the stripes slightly more pastel and less bright,” he explains. “The lips were customized by blending lipstick and glitter. The lightening bolt I made from reflective tape applied with eyelash glue.”
When it came to picking the right photographer to execute his vision, Wenner was an obvious choice for de Mey. “Theo is very talented and an awesome collaborator. He celebrates everyone’s ideas and talents,” de Mey says. “Theo is a good friend too and it never feels like work with him, and the comfortable atmosphere that he creates encourages everyone to do their best work.” With nothing but wispy clouds and blue sky to frame, the visual comes together for a strikingly balanced final result.
