A DIFFERENT KIND OF BEAUTY: YANNICK D'IS

An open-ended task can often be met with more frustration than creativity, but hairstylist Yannick d’Is found himself energized in crafting this vibrant creation. History typically inspires d’Is, who pulls ideas from all periods of the past in an attempt to modernize and reinvent how hair is viewed—the early-twentieth-century Parisian hairdresser Antoine de Paris, for example, is someone he cites as a consistent reference point. The style d’Is produced here is appropriately eclectic: both tribal Africa and Nijinsky’s Afternoon of a Faun for the Ballets Russes were main motivators.

“It’s more exciting to work in an expressive manner,” says d’Is, who partnered with photographer Benjamin Lennox and makeup artist Christine Corbel for this project. His typical work on set, while often collaborative, comes with restraints, and it was through the freeing of his skill, creativity, and imagination that this graphic look was created.

D’Is often employs color in his practice—if not in his personal life— but the shocking pink here was not premeditated. “Sometimes I think I have a color problem—I like too many!” he laughs. “I typically don’t wear color myself. I envision color in my work, and on others.” As for process, he sculpted the boldly colored wig with only a crimping iron. Sugar and water were added on top to produce the dry appearance.

The partnership with the photographer was also essential to capturing this image. Lennox, who enjoys working with color, produces ethereal imagery that is also instinctive and spontaneous. His artful eye, matched with Corbel’s soft makeup, lends itself well to d’Is’s textural brainchild. The result is atmospheric, created, in d’Is’s words, “to catch the light.”
