The biopic is, in many ways, a tricky proposition, a form where the carefully-researched realism of history and the emotional impact of drama can blend in a uniquely powerful way. The flip side is the difficulty of doing justice to the memory of a man who lived, especially one who is revered throughout the fashion world. “When you’re playing an icon such as Yves Saint Laurent,” says Pierre Niney, the 25-year-old French actor who does just that in the new film Yves Saint Laurent, “people have their own different expectations, so it’s hard to find the right balance. It’s hard to play someone who existed because of those expectations, but at the same time, he existed, so you have the model.”

Less glamorous with less money and less crowds, the Venice Architecture Biennale is the ugly stepsister to the Art Biennale’s Cinderella held in alternating years. There were anxious expectations for Rem Koolhaas, author of the seminal Delirious New York and founder of the far reaching and influential office OMA, who was tapped to take the helm and set things right. Critics have applauded his encyclopedic “Fundamentals” exhibition that resides in the Central Pavilion in the Giardini, as well as his autocratic decision to steer all the national pavilions to focus on the rise of modernism over the last hundred years. A commanding commissioner, Koolhaas has organized one of the most cohesive biennales in recent memory. Standouts included the Korean Pavilion, whose attempt to bridge North and South Korea through architecture garnered the Golden Lion, and the clever and funny Russian Pavilion as an international trade fair promoting the modernization efforts of its motherland.

It’s hard to believe Eden Full when she says there is no such thing as a child prodigy. Before she could legally buy a drink in her hometown of Calgary, she had already developed a prototype for a solar panel that was forty percent more efficient than standard panels. “It’s really just a matter of hard work,” Full reasons.

That hard work led Full to develop SunSaluter—a solar panel that rotates with the movement of the sun without the need for the active, electrical motors that power conventional solar panels. Designed specifically for developing countries in dire need of extra juice, Full won the prestigious Thiel Fellowship—worth $100,000 over two years—along with partnerships with Siemens and press from the New York Times. But the fellowship was a bit of a gamble, pulling Full out of her college plans.

We asked Thomas Giddings to shoot some of our favorite brand-new stars, styled by Zara Zachrisson in some of the best Prefall 2014 collections. Much is made of the young person’s imperative to change the world. Startups ought to think sustainably. Artists ought to think globally. Companies ought to give back. And yet how easy it is to do nothing? To head back to our social profiles or photo filters? At a time when people are more connected than they have ever been, we have simultaneously entered an age of narcissism, turning the social world into a tool to self-brand, self-define, and self-promote. And yet there is another groundswell building, one made up of young people who not only want to give back but also see the value in social innovation

Looking out over the mysterious, sculptural cliffs of RiME’s digital coast, one is caught by the beauty and wild imagination allowed to independent video game developers. “Joaquín Sorolla and the light of the Mediterranean were our main inspirations when creating RiME,” says Raúl Rubio Munárriz, creative director of Tequila Works, the company behind RiME. “Salvador Dalí’s negative space and Giorgio de Chirico’s Surrealist architecture contributed to create an eerie yet believable world.”

The standard shoot revolves around the ideas of the photographer or the creative director, with makeup artists and hairstylists working as a support team. Here at The Last Magazine, we wanted to celebrate these beauty experts in their own right, so we created a unique beauty portfolio called A Different Kind of Beauty that spans two issues and seven stunning images.

“I wanted to make denim appropriate,” quips Phillip Lim. “We all love denim and we all love wearing it, but I wanted to remove the notion that it can be too casual.” The California-born designer is talking about the origins of his new capsule collection, a twelve-piece, wide-ranging assortment of elevated denim essentials—a single-button, fitted blazer, a deep navy elongated vest that can be transformed into a trench coat, and a cropped leather-trimmed moto jacket, for instance—meant to challenge the idea that denim means distressed cut-offs, washed-out jeans, and summer festival-weekend wear. “There is always some form of denim in each of my collections,” explains Lim. “This time, we just singled it out and highlighted it as a capsule in its own right. Each of the pieces in the capsule sits alongside any of my seasons past and future with complete ease.”
