THE LAST RESORT: CASA BONAY

Barcelona is buzzing off the charts with activity year round, and while the new mayor has abandoned the idea of further hotel development, Catalans are finally opening up to the idea of embracing the now. There’s Soho House and an EDITION hotel already on the horizon, and music and food are the order of the day in Barna, with festivals arguably better than ours and the restaurant scene possibly the best in the world. Then along comes Casa Bonay, the young little upstart, going against the grain and making it look so damn good. Juice and coffee bars called, respectively, Mother and Satan; a communal hangout bar and party space, Libertine; and a genius restaurant, Elephant, Crocodile, Monkey, with a pop-up Vietnamese barbecue—now that’s arrogant, in the most delightful way. There’s even a library in the entrance and a retail-laden check-in experience. It’s low-key fabulousness, taking some inspiration from Berlin’s Michelberger and with a nod to the earlier, cooler Aces. But Casa Bonay’s rooms are infinitely better: they are gifted—no, blessed—with original mosaic floors and beautiful oversized wooden doors and high ceilings. I recently met Inés, the cofounder, and realized why Casa Bonay is the coolest new hotel in Barna…because she is the coolest girl in Barna…simple. I wish there was a Casa Bonay everywhere!

Casa Bonay is now open at Gran Vía de les Corts Catalanes 700, Barcelona. For more information, please visit CasaBonay.com.
