I was on tour with the Red Hot Chili Peppers all year and we passed through the Ukraine. Just before Kiev, we had been in Moscow and a friend mentioned to me that I should meet a Ukrainian model by the name of Nadiia Shapoval. Well after being a few days in the Ukraine I still had not met Nadiia and figured I would not get the chance to hang out with her as I was leaving the next day. But I got lucky and a couple of hours before we were out to the airport Nadiia came to meet me. At the time I think I was photographing the Ukrainian RHCP fan club in the middle of town so I hand my hands full. But I remember Nadiia arriving and I was thinking, Wow, this girl is cool. You could just tell by the way she carried herself with her leather jacket flung over her shoulders, long skirt, and headphones and stylish walk. I wrapped up shooting the fan club and Nadiia and I went for a walk through town. It was a bit rushed but we managed to snap a few photos and converse a bit. I wanted to hang out with her more but I was leaving so we planned to meet somewhere else soon. About a month later we met up in Zagreb and had a real hang. I knew Nadiia was cool but after spending a few days with her I can say she is really cool. Her aim is to be a stylist and I think she’s got what it takes for sure. Great style. Nadiia was born in Kiev and she is for sure one of the most well-known models in Kiev. I have to say I did not know who she was but everyone in the Ukraine seemed to know exactly who she was. BTW can I say that is such a beautiful country full of beautiful people. I absolutely love it there. That whole region is just rad. So much more exploring to be done there. And so much more hanging out needed with Nadiia. I don’t know enough to say more. Oh I can say I don’t like smoking cigarettes but if you are going to smoke them she smokes some really stylish ones. They’re all different colors and I think only made in the Ukraine. Whatever. Looked cool. I photographed Nadiia somewhere on the streets of Kiev. I’m not sure what neighborhood it was but it was on a hill and quite nice.

We’ve been around awhile now, and we know a lot of our readers might not have had the opportunity to experience our earlier issues. So we wanted to give you the chance to discover one of our favorite stories from our archive.
