FROM THE ARCHIVE: THE LAST PEOPLE – GREG CHAIT, FALL 2008

We’ve been around awhile now, and we know a lot of our readers might not have had the opportunity to experience our earlier issues. So we wanted to give you the chance to discover one of our favorite stories from our archive. Some of them feature actors, musicians, or artists who eventually made it big, talents we are proud to have tapped early in their careers. Some have brilliant writing, and some have beautiful photography. Some have both. But all of them are so great we thought they deserved a second chance. Today we present David Mushegain’s photograph and profile of the Elder Statesman designer Greg Chait, from the first installment of The Last People in Fall 2008. Congratulations to Chait on winning the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund prize last night!

Greg Chait is probably one of the most mellow and real people I know. Just super cool. His line Elder Statesman is based around great materials and great craftsmanship. His gorgeous heavy cashmere blankets, oversized hooded sweatshirts, and knit caps have become a favorite in upscale boutiques around the world. Greg is kind of one of those guys that will take something and make it happen, and he is making his line happen. I’m sure you’ll see it soon. I took this photo at Greg’s studio in Venice Beach—always on the phone, always working. Well not always. The kid can surf.
