TLM10: THE LAST PEOPLE - TAL SAPORTA

Ever since we began ten issues ago, we have worked with photographer David Mushegain every issue to bring you a collection of some of the raddest people from all around the world. David shoots and gets to know the young kids he meets on his travels, through his friends, or just walking down the street, and we are always happy to share his discoveries with you. Our weekly postings of David’s Last People continue right here.

So I was in Israel this fall. I was heading to meet up with someone to photograph them and thought I would walk along the boardwalk that lines the sea in the city center of Tel Aviv. I noticed from my hotel window that there was some swell out in the Mediterranean that morning. It didn’t really cross my mind that there would be surf but it looked like there were rideable waves. Anyway I was walking along the boardwalk and WTF do I see? A girl riding by in a bikini on a cruiser with a surf rack and two boards attached. I was like, What is going on here? I stopped her and asked her what her deal was. Well her deal is this. Her name is Tal Saporta. She is twenty-two years old and she is the women’s surfing champion of Israel. And Tal can surf. She rips!! I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I think Israel is so amazing and then to find out you can surf there. Then to meet Tal. Anyway I had my camera bag and jean shorts on and Tal was like, “Hey let’s go surf.” I was like, “Umm I don’t have any board shorts.” She was like, “Whatever, go in your jean shorts.” I was like, “Okay, let’s do it.” We left my cameras at the lifeguard hut and we headed for the sea. Her local break is Hilton beach in Tel Aviv. I think we surfed one break over. It was a shallow rock reef with a perfect A-frame peak. WTF again. Was so fun. I was so stoked and it was just the most awesome morning ever. And let me tell you Tal was killing it. She makes solid turns and hits and she can just surf really really good. She’s in Hawaii now and I can’t wait to see some pics of what she’s up to in the water. Anyway after we surfed we went to get juice at an amazing juice bar in town and had a long talk about all kinds of stuff. My whole experience in Israel was incredible and Tal made it that much more amazing. I’m so stoked to have met her and can’t wait to surf with her again. I photographed her in front of the break we surfed at right there in the middle of Tel Aviv. Radical.
