VINTAGE TREASURES ON LA DOUBLEJ

J.J. Martin, the acclaimed fashion and design journalist and Milan resident, has been amassing a collection of vintage clothing and objects for fifteen years. Now, with the launch of her e-commerce site LaDoubleJ.com this week, she is offering up these rare finds, for a price. Part of the inspiration was Martin’s own approach to vintage. She insists that vintage should be worn on a daily basis, preferably together with the latest trends and designer delectables. “I only buy pieces that make me jump up and down,” Martin says. “That could be a fifty-dollar, no-name printed cotton Sixties jumpsuit or something valuable from Valentino or Oscar de la Renta in the Seventies. I am not a snob about it. I just love these clothes.”

This eclectic attitude makes La DoubleJ a clickable treasure trove, with cherry-picked pieces such as a Sixties Emanuel Ungaro monochrome wool dress and a navy leather two-piece from the Seventies, as well as jewelry signed by Elsa Schiaparelli, Miriam Haskell, and Ugo Correani, a successful, but unknown, costume jeweler who collaborated with the likes of Gianni Versace and Yves Saint Laurent. In fact, the real impetus for starting up the site occurred when Martin stumbled upon Correani’s locked-away archive.

Martin has an eye for the unusual and the unique. “I feel like fashion has become so mass-produced and so fast food chain–like that most of the big brands no longer have that thrilling appeal. Fashion has lost some of its magic,” she explains. “I still get totally excited though when I score an incredible one-of-a-kind piece from the Sixties or Seventies. Vintage gives you that satis- faction that you’re buying something that’s truly special and that’s yours alone.”
