CMJ 2015: FRANKIE COSMOS

Singer-songwriter and New York native Greta Kline graced the Wick stage in Williamsburg during this year’s CMJ Music Marathon as her latest identity, Frankie Cosmos. The nickname, given by her current boyfriend and inspired by the great Frank O’Hara, eventually transformed into a dreamy persona with backing from three musicians. Their recent performance kicked off the Kline’s American tour in promotion of her latest EP, Fit Me In.

Kline materialized as if she had just rolled out of bed, dressed in a striped crop top, bright yellow taxi pajamas, and hiking boots. Her grown armpit hair peeked out from under her shirt in proper feminist fashion. The band members, unassuming and endearingly awkward, casually chatted amongst themselves, arriving on stage a few minutes early. Frankie Cosmos has a lo-fi, melancholy sound that is sweet but slightly self-deprecating. Tracks laced with hollow guitar and soft background vocals result in the lax, despondent feel of bedroom dream pop. The band played one of their hits, “Birthday Song.” Kline sang, with closed eyes hidden behind her long brown hair, “I wonder how ever he loved me/I am so clumsy/I think how repulsive I am to you,” lyrics that seemed to ring true amongst the offbeat Brooklyn crowd.

In an avant-garde display, Kline later brought a rubber hand to the stage and slowly caressed her body with the extremity while performing a track from their unreleased EP. Sheepishly, Kline then asked the crowd, “What do you call an alligator in a vest? An investi-gator!” explaining that she had heard the joke at a set the night before and it had made her fall in love with the performance. She hoped it would have the same effect on us.
