CMJ 2015: SON LITTLE

Days before releasing his self-titled album, Son Little played for a tightly packed Rockwood Music Hall as part of this year’s CMJ Music Marathon. Son Little is the latest project for singer Aaron Livingston, who has formerly collaborated with musicians RJD2 and the Roots, and as such, there has been much anticipation leading up to the record’s release. An American and European tour that will end in December has only added to the buzz.

Livingston appeared festively outfitted in an orange t-shirt and a Mets cap. He casually asked after the score of the ongoing game, as though he was there to just hang out with everyone. Interactions between him and the crowd felt personable and genuine, much like the undeniably deep sound of his music. His tracks fall in the vein of blues-rock with an apparent hip-hop and nu-soul influence, each employing strong chords that drip with soul. It is this dynamic sensation of something both old and new that makes Son Little highly appealing.

As he began to play “O Mother,” a single off the new album, the crowd seemed to feel the passion oozing from Livingston’s cherry red Epiphone as the strong bass line pulsed like a heartbeat through the hall. Son Little’s bluesy guitar and raw vocals have the power to illicit a range of emotions from moody blues to upbeat funk. “Can I love the world and hate the way it makes me feel?” he asks vehemently. Livingston’s powerful sound is able to send chills down your spine and stir something in your heart. He closed his eyes and crooned into the mic, “Sex and candy—so young, bet I’m gonna get me some.” And the crowd asked for more.
