THE LAST PEOPLE – MARLOWE TATIANA GRANADOS

Ever since we began back in 2008, we have worked with photographer David Mushegain every issue to bring you a collection of some of the raddest people from all around the world. David shoots and gets to know the young kids he meets on his travels, through his friends, or just walking down the street, and we are always happy to share his discoveries with you. Our weekly postings of David’s Last People continue right here.

I first met Marlowe Tatiana Granados when I was in Toronto directing a TV commercial for Nikon cameras. I was casting local cool characters and the gorgeous seventeen-year-old Marlowe came onto the radar. We stayed in touch on Facebook and ended up becoming good friends. I think after that commercial we first met up in London and had a hang. Marlowe had been living there for a while and actually just moved back to Toronto like a week or two ago. Marlowe is a real awesome person. She’s sweet and she’s cute and she’s hardworking. She’s a great writer and photographer. She just published her first photo book this past summer. It’s called I Am No Longer Alaska and it’s a dialogue between her text and photos. The book was published by RVCA’s Artist Network Program and done in conjunction with the show I did at colette about young cool creatives around the world. Oh Marlowe just finished making a short film she wrote and directed. It’s called “Paintings From Dallas.” I can’t wait to see it. She was shooting this in London when I last saw her. I asked Marlowe to describe her work for me. “In the different kinds of work I produce I think there are a lot of common elements. Whenever I’m truly happy about something I’ve made, it has to have a level of sincerity in it. I put a lot of myself in my work and my obsessions with beauty, relationships, and provocativeness. There has to be a bit of humor as well, when you’re self-aware there are times you have to be like, I’m actually ridiculous—it’s important to have some levity,” she wrote me. I could not have said it better so I just let her say it. Marlowe’s so sweet. Sitting here writing about her makes me miss her. Oh yeah. She’s working on a cool zine. Her and Coco Young are collaborating on a zine called Boys Boys Boys. I didn’t get too much information from Marlowe about the zine but she did tell me this: “I expect I’ll be getting a lot of angry calls from ex-boyfriends.” Sounds like a good zine to me. Anyway keep your eye out for Marlowe’s work. I think she will do some great things. Already has. We shot this photo at her apartment in Dalston, London.
